Giving in time of need- The Jordan River Principle
The Jordan River literally springs up out of the ground! During a trip to the Holy Land we visited several sites where water literally was gushing up out of the ground. The ice cold refreshing waters that rise from these sites all form into one beautiful living stream and eventually a rushing, flowing, life-giving river. The river of Life! As it spreads out through the plains and winds its way across the countryside, like it has for thousands of years, it gives life to all the plants, animals and people who live in the region known as Galilee. It is the lifeblood for the Sea of Galilee, a large bountiful body of water that is beaming with fish, plants, and animals and supports a large population of people who make their living from this life giving sea. But it didn’t stop there, it continued on… through the rugged terrain of mountains finding its way into what is known as the Dead Sea or the Salt Sea. One thing we were informed of was that the Dead Sea has no tributaries at the end of the sea. It does not allow any of the water to flow through the shores of its banks. As a result over thousands of years all of the sediment and salt chemicals have accumulated over time and the water has become thick with life killing salt.
The life lesson is simple. God blesses us with all we need to sustain life and all He wants is for us to be like Him and pass it on to others. When we do this He blesses us with more and more so that we can give more and more. But…. when we keep it for ourselves we end up losing all the inherent potential encapsulated in that gift. God loves a cheerful giver. Throughout history men and woman who have accumulated great wealth have learned this principle. Be a River of Life and the blessings will never stop flowing!
“Plant a kernel of wheat and you reap a pint, plant a pint and you reap a bushel. Always the law works to give you back more than you give”. – Anthony Norvell
What better time to give than when people need it the most? Be creative in your giving! You may not have money to give right now but great joy and blessing can come from something as simple as a little encouragement or lending a helping hand. Giving in time of need can be one of the most powerful things we can do to lift our spirits and get our minds off of our problems. The buzzword today is “givers get”. While we shouldn’t give merely to get, giving is probably the most rewarding thing we can do for ourselves. Give of our time, talent and treasure. Remember, no matter how difficult your situation there is always someone a whole lot worse off than you!
